Mongolia
We travel frequently to Mongolia where its estimated
there are 5000 unemployed schoolteachers and 5000 unemployed nurses some of whom
speak English, and most of whom have direct care giving experience looking after
people within their extended families. We have been told that the majority of
these people are women.
Mongolia as a country relates very well to Canada.
We are both cold weather countries with two large neighbours and in fact
we share the same neighbour, Russia. Mongolians
prefer cold weather and love remote areas like our North.
Those that live in Ulaanbaatar the capital cannot wait to go back to
their 'countryside' where they were born. They love to hunt and fish and most
have an agricultural background. Most speak Russian and many are now developing
good English language capability. Some also speak Korean, Japanese, German and French.
Mongolia is about the same size as our three Prairie Provinces and
Ulaanbaatar is about the size of Winnipeg.
Population is about 2,500,000 of which half live in the city and half in
the country. They have over ten
times the number of animals in the form of sheep, goats, cows, horses, camels
and yaks. Mongolians love dairy
products from all these animals. Some
of Mongolia's claims to fame are Genghis Khan and cashmere.
Some Mongolian handicrafts sold in the local stores.
